Session 18: The Latest in Corneal Dystrophies and Degenerations: From the OD and MD Perspectives

Presenters: Blair Lonsberry, MS, OD, Med, FAAO & Michael Greenwood, MD

As the scope of therapeutic privileges for optometrists continues to expand, the working relationship between optometry and ophthalmology becomes even more important. The diagnosis and treatment of corneal dystrophies and degenerations is a crucial aspect of clinical practice as the clinician needs to know when the patient requires a referral for advanced treatment and what is currently/soon to be available. This interactive course will examine the various forms of corneal dystrophies and degenerations focusing on patient symptoms, diagnostic criteria, impact on vision, and the current surgical management and treatment options with an emphasis on co-managing surgical patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • The diagnostic criteria and presentation of the most common corneal dystrophies (e.g. basement membrane dystrophies (with RCE), stromal dystrophies (Granular/Macular), endothelial dystrophies (Fuchs)).
  • The latest treatment options for patients suffering from a recurrent corneal erosion with a particular emphasis on surgical treatment and co-management of these patients.
  • The latest treatment options for patients suffering from a stromal corneal dystrophy (e.g. granular or macular) with a particular emphasis in surgical treatment (DALK versus PK) and co-management of these patients.
  • The latest treatment options for patients suffering from Fuch’s corneal dystrophy with a particular emphasis on surgical treatment (DSAEK versus DMEK versus PK) and co-management of these patients.
  • The diagnostic criteria and presentation of the most common corneal degenerations (e.g. keratoconus, Terriens, Moorens).
