Session 11: The Secondary Glaucomas: From the OD and MD Perspective

Presenters: Blair Lonsberry, MS, OD, Med, FAAO & Michael Greenwood, MD

The secondary glaucomas are a varied group of conditions that are often asymptomatic and challenging to diagnose, manage, and treat. The following interactive presentation will explore the development of glaucoma with a secondary cause and the latest treatment/management options emphasizing the surgical options that are often required in these patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand what constitutes a secondary glaucoma.
  • To recognize a patient suffering from neovascular glaucoma and the appropriate treatment and management strategies.
  • To recognize a patient suffering from pigment dispersion syndrome, the potential development of glaucoma, and review the appropriate treatment and management strategies.
  • To recognize a patient suffering from pseudoexfoliation syndrome, the potential development of glaucoma, and review the appropriate treatment and management strategies.
  • To recognize a patient suffering from lens induced glaucomas including phacomorphic and phacolytic, their diagnosis, treatment, and management.
  • To recognize a patient suffering from elevated episcleral venous pressure, the potential development of glaucoma, and review the appropriate treatment and management strategies.

About the Speakers

Blair Lonsberry, MS, OD, MEd, FAAO

Professor, Pacific University College of Optometry

Blair Lonsberry, MS, OD, Med, FAAO, grew up in Rossburn, Manitoba (Canada). He obtained his optometry degree from the University of Waterloo in 1996 after completing a Master of Science in Physiology from the University of Manitoba. He completed his residency in Primary Care Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1997, then joined the faculty at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. During his time at SCO, he completed a Master in Education degree with an emphasis in adult learning. Currently, Dr. Lonsberry is a full professor with Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon.

 

Michael Greenwood, MD

Clinical Assistant, University of North Dakota School of Medicine

Michael Greenwood, MD, is a Refractive, Cornea, Glaucoma, and Advanced Cataract surgeon at Vance Thompson Vision in Fargo, ND. He received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota, completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, and then did a 1-year fellowship in advanced anterior segment surgery at Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, SD. He has published numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles, and has presented nationally and internationally. He lives in Fargo, ND with his wife, Heidi, and daughter, Quincy, and enjoys hockey, running, and spending time with family.
